A service learning course in which students apply computer literacy, multimedia design, and technology to assist schools, nonprofit organizations, and community agencies. The theme for the course is "Bridging the Digital Divide." Note: students must participate in required service placements with hours to be arranged. Students must be able to create and manage a web site. (Prereq: Junior or Senior Standing)
This course was a volunteer experience at an organization in the technology field. For my experience, I volunteered at Computers-4-Kidz, which is a non-profit that recycles technology donations and redistributes at a discount to students.
It was a great experience as it was one of my first where I found that I could use the skills I learned in the CS and put them to use in a real world environment. I also gained insight into how volunteering, non-profits, recycling of electronics, and donations are handled.
The knowledge I learned from the computer science program helped me easily grasp the tasks that were required to refurbish donated equipment and redistributing in a secure manner.
